 Church Staff

Several years ago we introduced and gave short biographies on our staff. With changes in membership and activity, we thought we would re-introduce the staff and their job descriptions for you.

Of course, William Starr is our pastor, and as such his job description is just about everything (including the fact that he's a United Methodist Woman—???). Bill is originally from Kittanning , PA ; graduated from Grove City College ; and received his masters degree from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington , DC . Bill has been in the ministry for 32 years; serving churches in New Paris, Homer City, and St. Marys before coming to Warren in 1998. Nancy is his wife, a physical therapist working at CTI. Andrew, his eldest, is working as an architectural intern in Miami , FL. Jessie will complete her masters in April, to become a physician's assistant. Abby is a junior at Westminster in elementary education.

John Slaney is our organist, director of music. Obviously John is an artist on the organ, but he also takes responsibility for the Chancel Choir, planning special music events, training acolytes, and more. John hails from the Pittsburgh area(Pirate fever!); attended Duquesne for music; went to Union Theological Seminary in NYC for sacred music; was hired at FUMC; then took a degree in pharmacy; and also works at Crones. Sylvia, his wife, is a nurse. She also serves as our chief communion steward; and also plays the carillon. David is a senior at Pitt-Bradford. And Mark has begun his education at JCC.

Gale Lindell is our part-time co-director of music. Gale is responsible for the Handbell Choir, the Children's Choir, and the Youth Choir. Much of her work takes place at LOGOS on Wednesday nights. She is wonderful on the trumpet; part of Jubilee Brass and other musical programs in Warren . Jack is Gale's husband. He is a dairy farmer in Lander.

John Hausmann is our newest staff member. John serves as our part-time financial secretary. He keeps the books, counts and records the offerings, pays the bills, accounts for the endowments, and supports the Finance Committee in its function. John lives in Warren . His eldest son, Brad is a captain in the Marine Corp. currently serving in Ramadi , Iraq . Marc, is a Corrections Officer at the PA State Prison in Mercer, PA. Matt, is a financial advisor with the Legend Group in Erie , PA. Ann is a nurse and lives in Tuscon, AZ. John has two grandchildren.

Heidi Ketzko is our part-time Director of Christian Nurture. Heidi's responsibilities include recruiting teachers and resourcing the Christian education program in our church. Part of that includes helping the Education Committee and making sure that LOGOS is running well. You'll find Heidi volunteering all over the place keeping herself very busy. Heidi is also our part-time, assistant janitor. She is to help our janitor when special tasks need done or when he is on vacation. Heidi's eldest child is Alyssa, who works at Warren News. Hannah is a junior in high school; a member of the marchinband there; and very active in the youth, as an acolyte, nursery helper, etc. Heidi's mom—Bebe Warren is also active in the church; including serving as a nursery caregiver.

Jane Culver has served our church for 28 years. She was first hired part-time as Financial Secretary for 16 years. After the secretary retired she served as financial and office secretary for 5 years. When things were getting too hectic she decided to give up the financial part and work as full time secretary. Though the job description has changed over time, she is responsible for the desk: receiving people, hospitality, keeping records for people, the bulletin, the newsletter, helping the staff with printing and publications, helping the financial secretary count offerings and keep records, everything a good secretary (and she is!) does. Jane's husband is John, a retired engineer from Sylvania . Bryan, her eldest, is superintendent at the Westwood Country Club in Williamsville , NY . Jason is superintendent at Pine Hills Golf Course in Marshburg , PA and Lori is a waitress at Venus in Warren . There are 5 wonderful grandchildren to (spoil) enjoy.

And Bob Confer ! Bob is our full-time janitor. He cleans the building, cuts the grass, moves the snow, and helps people all over the building get their work done with lifting and moving. We don't find Bob saying “no” to too many people. Bob is married to Linda, an employee of Blair. Bob has a son, William a manager of DeCarlos Pizza in West Virginia . Bob is a big hit with his nieces and nephews, and many of the children of the church and pre-school.

This is our staff for now. We are interviewing for a full-time youth leader and administrative assistant. We hope to have them in place soon. We'll introduce you then.

EDUCATION BEYOND

SUNDAY CHURCH SCHOOL

-- DivorceCare —This series features 33 renowned experts (Kay Arthur, Dr. Tony Evans, Larry Burkett, Paula Rinehart, Dr. David Seamands, to name a few) on divorce & recovery topics as seen from a biblical perspective. We now have new DVD's that will reach the hearing impaired in our community. These video seminars are combined with the support group discussion of the materials presented during the video. Childcare continues to be provided at no expense to the participants. If you know anyone who's going through divorce or separation, tell him or her about DivorceCare. People are welcome to join anytime.

We also have DivorceCare 4 Kids , which would run concurrently with the Adult DivorceCare group that meets in the Everts Classroom . This outreach program provides an opportunity for our church to help children from this community who have experienced divorce and separation of their parents. We are able to show how the love of Jesus can heal the hurting and the brokenhearted. This is not a counseling service or a one-on-one program . DC4K is designed to help hurting children heal in a group setting, to bring these children into the loving arms of a church family and to feel God's love surround them.

We will start a new session in early November . For more information, please contact Heidi Ketzko through the church office.

ONE SILENT NIGHT

“One Silent Night,” the display of family manger sets, will again be featured by our church during the annual Christmas Walk in Warren . The Walk has traditionally been the first Friday in December, this year that's December 5. We're giving plenty of notice so that you can get your manger sets out early and plan to participate in this beautiful and fun event. A new feature will be the addition of an Angel Corner. Many people mentioned last year they had angels that they would like to display and so an area will be set-up for Angels in the transept pews. Also, this year, the church will be open with volunteers the evening before the Walk so that you can arrange your own manger set if you'd like. Plan to join us for a beautiful time of the year to honor our Christ's birth in this special way. Questions or concerns please call Kathy Taydus at 563-3482.

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS

The Jolley Class (Covert Room) continues with their study on “ Companions In Christ ” led by Rev. Starr. This class is for adults of ALL ages, so please join them as they learn more about being in relationship with one another and with Christ.

The “Faithful Followers ” (Parlor B) continue with a video/study entitled “ Living The Good Life Together—Hospitality: risking welcome ” led by Karen Yourchisin. “What does it mean to give & receive welcome?” What can we learn from this practice and why is it risky? In this study of ‘Christian Character in the Community', you will learn to understand why hospitality is basic to our lives as Christians. Topics include: Receiving Welcome, Risking Welcome, Risking Worship & Risking Justice. Please join this group of adults of ALL ages as they “ Come & See (John 1:39 ) and “ Go and do likewise (Luke 10:37 ) and learn how to put into practice what they have learned.

The Allen Class, ( Parlor A), continues with their study with Gospels, Acts & Pauline Epistles: “The New Testament Community” led by Mary Merenick & Jane Betts. This group will begin with “ The Birth of a New Community ” with a lesson from each of the four Gospels, then move on to explore “ The Development and Work of the New Community ” from texts taken from the book of Acts. Through the final five lessons entitled “ The New Community Faces Growth Pains ,” we may see reflections of our own faith communities' struggles, conflicts & resolutions.

Our children in Pre-School – Grade 6 studies from “ Rock Solid: Building a Heart of Faith ”! This new & exciting curriculum is based on Matthew 7:24 ( NRSV ) “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on a rock”. Each child will be invited to have a personal faith experience with God. They will learn through age-appropriate activities, crafts, stories and games designed to give them the tools to know God through Jesus Christ to engage their hearts and minds to build a lifelong faith. Please (by remembering your pledge at baptism) bring your children to Sunday School so that they can enter into a new & exciting relationship with Jesus Christ and why not stay and go to one of the adult classes mentioned above.
